• 1 May - The seat of the South African Republic government is officially transferred from Potchefstroom to Pretoria
• 4 May - The Orange Free State signs a peace treaty with Moshoeshoe I at Wittebergen, near Winburg, ending the first Basuto war

• 26 June - The Natal Railway Company opens the first railway line in South Africa, the 3,2km railway line ran along the Bluff side of the harbour to Durban

• 17 September - The Alfred Dock in Table Bay, Cape Town is officially opened by sixteen year old Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, second son of Queen Victoria

• The first indenture of Indian workers arrive in Natal to work in the sugar industry
• The first telegraph service in South Africa starts operating between Cape Town and Simonstown
• The penny post in Cape Town is started
• Boer republics north of Vaal River unite as South African Republic

Many African people died around this time after Charles Darwin's book on evolution was published. Many white people read it and thought that black people were still in the faze of 'the monkey'. They went about killing hundreds of Africans just because they thought that the Africans had not evolved properly. This obviously was a sad moment for many families in Africa. Some black schools have a moments silence in June time to remember that terrible time.
