Ae, Dumfries and Galloway

The village of Ae
The village of Ae

Ae is a village in Dumfries and Galloway, south west Scotland.

It is between the Water of Ae and the Goukstane Burn after they have flowed out of the Forest of Ae. By repute it is the shortest toponym in the United Kingdom.

Founded by the Forestry Commission in 1947, Ae is set in a conifer forest of more than 12,500 acres. The population is about 200.

Experiments at Ae include successful afforestation of former peat bogs, formerly thought to be unplantable. Plantation has also been established at a height of 1,750 feet. The forest consists mainly of Sitka spruce, but there is also larch, Scots pine, and Norway spruce. There is much wildlife, including deer, fox, hare, weasel, woodpigeon, yellowhammer, sparrowhawk, jay, pheasant, partridge and red squirrels.
