Accessible Information on Development Activities (AiDA) is the largest free and public database of development activities. Created and maintained by the Development Gateway Foundation, AiDA is a database of project funding and implementing agency information from international development donors. AiDA fulfills a global initiative that has the objective to capture a close-to complete and comprehensive set of core information on development activities of donors, private foundations and civil society organizations. The database currently contains information on more than 500,000 development activities gathered from publicly-available data from a wide range of bilateral and multilateral donors.

[edit] History

AiDA was created by the Development Gateway Foundation at the request of World Bank president James Wolfensohn. Building on the work started by the International Network for Development Information Exchange and the International Development Markup Language (IDML) Initiative, the Development Gateway Foundation carried out a successful pilot to test the application of XML to consolidate information and to scale up the use of IDML for information sharing. The AiDA directory is managed by a team with staff from Development Gateway Foundation, OECD-DAC, UNDP, and the World Bank. Day to day management of AiDA was undertaken by the World Bank until July 1, 2004, when the responsibility was transferred to the Development Gateway Foundation.

[edit] Capabilities

The AiDA site serves as a directory for information on development activities that often reside on websites of participating organizations. Participating organizations share a standardized set of metadata which serve as the foundation for the AiDA directory. It is not an activity or resource tracking system per se but rather provides core information that can be used in conjunction with information from other sources to support research and analysis of the distribution and use of development assistance. Most users of AiDA fall into 1 of 3 categories: public sector development practitioners, private sector development practitioners, and academia.

Information in AiDA provides a snapshot of who is doing what and where at specific points in time. The current implementation of AiDA allows a users to view and extract data by country, donor, sector, topic, date, status or other criteria defined by the user. Project information comes several donors, including: CARIS, DFID, Gates Foundation, IDB, IDRC, IFAD, MacArthur Foundation, OECD-DAC, the Soros Foundation, UNCCD, UNCDF, UNDP, UNFPA, USAID, and the World Bank.
