Foot per second

The foot per second (plural feet per second) is a unit of both speed (scalar) and velocity (vector quantity, which includes direction). It expresses the distance in feet (ft) traveled or displaced, divided by the time in seconds (s, or sec). The corresponding unit in the International System of Units (SI) is the metre per second.

Abbreviations include ft/s, ft/sec and fps, although the much more scientific form ft s-1 is not used very often (those who would use that kind of notation would probably be using SI units instead).

[edit] Conversions

1 foot per second is equivalent to:

0.3048 metres per second (exactly)
0.68181818... (36005280) miles per hour
1.09728 kilometres per hour (exactly)

Conversely (these are all approximate):

1 metre per second = 3.2808 feet per second
1 mile per hour = 1.46666... (52803600) feet per second
1 kilometre per hour = 0.9113 feet per second
