Overriding aorta

Overriding aorta
Classification and external resources
Diagram of a healthy heart and one suffering from overriding aorta
ICD-10 Q25.4
(EUROCAT Q25.42)
ICD-9 747.21

An overriding aorta is a congenital heart defect where the aorta is positioned directly over a ventricular septal defect, instead of over the left ventricle.

The result is that the aorta receives some blood from the right ventricle, which reduces the amount of oxygen in the blood.

It is one of the four conditions of the Tetralogy of Fallot. The other conditions are pulmonary stenosis, RVH, and VSD (ventricular septal defect).
