A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

Star Wars is an influential space opera saga and fictional universe created by producer George Lucas in the early 1970s. The saga began with the film Star Wars, which was released on May 25, 1977. The film, later retitled Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, became a pop culture phenomenon, and spawned five more feature films and an extensive collection of licensed books, comics, video games, spin-off films, television series, toys, and other products — all of which are set within a fictional "galaxy far, far away."

Jabba the Hutt is a fictional character in George Lucas's science fiction saga Star Wars. He first appeared on film in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (1977) as a slug-like alien. Jabba was originally portrayed by an immense latex puppet, but in other films he is a computer-generated image (CGI). Besides the films, Jabba the Hutt is featured in Star Wars literature and is sometimes referenced by his full name, Jabba Desilijic Tiure The character's role in Star Wars is primarily antagonistic. He is a 600-year-old Hutt crime lord and gangster who employs a retinue of criminals, bounty hunters, smugglers, assassins, and bodyguards to operate his criminal empire. Jabba the Hutt's palace on the desert planet Tatooine is a former monastery for a group of mystics known as the B'omarr monks. There he keeps a host of entertainers, slaves, droids, and alien creatures at his disposal. Jabba has a grim sense of humor, a bellicose laugh, an insatiable appetite, and an affinity for gambling, slave girls, and torture.

Did you know that...

  • Luke Skywalker's name was originally supposed to be Annikin Starkiller, according to early versions of the original scripts? The name was later recycled for Bendak Starkiller.
  • The shooting location for Return of the Jedi was masked as the shooting location of the fictional film Blue Harvest? Lucasfilm allegedly wanted to avoid the publicity associated with a new Star Wars film, and even went as far as to have Blue Harvest shirts and caps made for the cast and crew. Another reason for this was people charging extra for props, sets, etc. on the films because the film was Star Wars.
  • During the shooting of The Empire Strikes Back, Lucasfilm was in grave danger of bouncing its paychecks? Bank of America, its primary lender, yanked its financing as the film's costs climbed over budget. Lucasfilm's management pointed out that Empire was the sequel to the most successful film of all time, but the bank's new entertainment manager refused to back down. This debacle forced George Lucas to return to Twentieth Century Fox for financing, a threat to his creative autonomy that he had wanted to avoid. (Source: Empire of Dreams documentary.)

A Wookiee is a member of a race of hairy bipeds in the fictional Star Wars universe. The most famous Wookiee is Chewbacca, a companion to Han Solo. Other prominent Wookiees include Lowbacca (the nephew of Chewbacca, and a Jedi), Tyvokka, Zaalbar, Chuundar, Attichitcuk, Tarfful, and Hanharr. A common, though incorrect, spelling is Wookie (with only one trailing "e").
