Televisión Española (TVE) (literally, Spanish Television) is the national state-owned public-service television broadcaster in Spain. TVE's activities are financed by a combination of advertising revenue and subsidies from the national government.

TVE belongs to the RTVE Corporation which has overall responsibility for national public-service radio and television under a Parliament-appointed General Manager who, as well as being answerable to a Board of Directors, reports to an all-party committee of the national parliament, as provided for in the Public Radio and Television Law of 2006.

[edit] Terrestrial (UHF) channels

TVE began broadcasting on 28 October 1956 on VHF. A second UHF channel was added in 15 November 1966 and the two services are today known as La Uno (TVE1) and La Dos (TVE2). Until the 1980s, they were the only channels in Spain. After the introduction of autonomic and private channels, they lost audience, though still maintain good rating with some programs, like news program Telediario.

It has been often accused of being manipulated by whoever ran the country. They still hold an air of officialness as demonstrated every year by the audience of the Christmas Eve message of king Juan Carlos I. It is broadcast simultaneously by almost every Spanish channel but TVE gets the highest audience.

[edit] Other channels

  • Canal 24 Horas: a 24-hour news channel which began broadcasting on 15 September 1997
  • Canal Clásico: Classical music
  • Clan TVE: Children's channel, previously time-shared with Canal TVE 50 Años; now 24 hour service.
  • Docu TVE (formerly Grandes Documentales Hispavisión): Documentaries
  • Teledeporte: Sports
  • TVE 50 Años (formerly Canal Nostalgia): archive material, renamed for TVE's 50th anniversary in 2006. Time-shared with Clan TVE until service ended on 1 January 2007.

These channels, except Canal Clásico and Docu TVE, are available on digital terrestrial television.

Televisión Española also transmits a satellite service, TVE Internacional, in four different streams for Europe, Africa, Asia, and America.

[edit] News Services

Both the international channel and TVE1 have regular news bulletins marketed under the Telediario name. Regional news bulletins are also broadcast at 15.00 (local time) and 21.00 on TVE1. TVE2 also has its own national news bulletin, "La 2 Noticias" ("The 2 News"), which began as a breakfast news programme in the mid-1990s and was later revamped as a nightly news bulletin at 22.00.
